Official Statement by Ceyhun Kırok:
“I want to express our long-standing concerns about the environmental impacts of the Teknecik Power Plant. We have serious concerns about the potential causes of public health issues in our region.
Recent statistics in Çatalköy are quite alarming. We lost six citizens in the past week, and it is estimated that approximately fifty percent of deaths in our region are caused by cancer cases. Since the beginning of 2024, it has been reported that at least fourteen people have died from cancer within the Çatalköy Esentepe municipal boundaries.
Given the severity of this situation, we are calling for urgent action. The high cancer rates observed especially in certain neighborhoods require a detailed investigation.
Our recommendations are as follows:
- Developing a comprehensive health map of the region in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and relevant academic institutions.
- Assessment of the environmental impacts of the Teknecik Power Plant by an independent board.
- Implementation of emission control measures in accordance with international standards.
- Regular monitoring and reporting of the health status of residents in the region.
We invite the competent authorities to give the necessary importance to this critical issue and to create an urgent action plan. We are ready to cooperate with all stakeholders to protect public health and ensure environmental sustainability.
We need to produce realistic and scientifically based solutions to solve this problem. We must work together for the health and well-being of our citizens.”
