Statements on Environment and Public Health by Catalkoy-Esentepe Mayor Ceyhun Kırok

Important Statements from Catalkoy-Esentepe Mayor Ceyhun Kırok

Catalkoy-Esentepe Mayor Ceyhun Kırok answered questions posed by Eda Alisinanoglu on KIBRIS TV.

Mayor Kirok made serious statements about public health and environmental pollution, emphasizing that urgent steps need to be taken to solve the current problems.

Drawing particular attention to the black smoke coming from the Teknecik Power Plant, Kırok stated that the people of the region are seriously disturbed by this situation and stressed that the problem needs to be solved as soon as possible.

He announced that they will hold a public meeting with the relevant chambers tonight at 7:30 PM at MC Palace and will provide detailed information on this issue.

Power Outages and Public Health
Mayor Kırok also addressed the problems caused by power outages, stating that “citizens are in great anxiety due to power outages.”

Kırok said, “We have patients connected to respiratory devices, and power outages create a life-threatening situation.

Can one live with this fear every day?

No one has the right to inflict this torment on anyone else.”

Environmental Pollution and Health Issues
In his speech, Kırok drew attention to environmental pollution and public health issues, saying, “Environmental pollution, the black smoke coming from the Teknecik Power Plant, poisoned people, and the destruction in nature are causing major problems.”

He stated that they will provide more information on these issues at the public meeting they will hold tonight at 7:30 PM.

Kırok said, “We need to question the causes of increasing cancer cases in our region. We have to ask these questions for the health of our citizens living in areas such as Çatalköy, Esentepe, Karaağaç, Bahçeli, Arapköy, and Alagadi.

This is my duty, and no one has the right to prevent us from questioning this.”

Furthermore, he emphasized that this issue has reached a scale that concerns not only the region but the entire Mediterranean. Black Smoke and Its Effects on Health Opposing the mentality that claims black smoke is harmless, Kırok said, “There are those who argue that the smoke is caused by poor maintenance of turbines or the use of low-quality fuel. However, what’s important is how to eliminate the harm this smoke causes to people and living beings. We need to put an end to this environmental disaster immediately, not just on behalf of the local population, but for all stakeholders on the island.” Thoughts on Permanent Solutions Addressing the problems caused by power outages, Kırok stated, “When the electricity goes out, there are numerous complaints on social media. The citizens are right; it’s really difficult to be without electricity in this heat. We have patients dependent on respiratory devices, and power outages create a life-threatening situation. Can one live with this fear every day? No one has the right to inflict this torment on anyone else.” Kırok pointed out the need for permanent solutions, saying, “We must produce short-term solutions such as improving fuel quality and changing filters. If these are endangering public health, we must stop the operations of these facilities. If we maintain the mentality that everything is fine as long as our lights are on, much worse days await us.”
