Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arıklı announced that construction has begun on the road, which will extend from the Acapulco Junction to Kyrenia, and will significantly ease traffic in Kyrenia.
Arıklı stated, “This government is building roads that have been untouched for 50 years. Road construction is currently underway at six locations,” listing these projects as follows:
- Dipkarpaz-Manastır Road
- Güvercinlik-Çayönü Road
- Tenten Road
- Kayalar-Sadrazamköy Road
- Çatalköy-Girne Road
- Alsancak-Lapta Road
Emphasizing that road work has been carried out on an unprecedented scale during this government’s term, Arıklı said, “Despite this, some people are holding us accountable for 50 years of negligence and demanding that every road be built immediately, as if we had a magic wand.”
Arıklı noted that 1,450 kilometers of the 1,620-kilometer main road are in good condition, while approximately 200 kilometers are in very poor condition. He described the Ercan-İskele and Tepebaşı-Geçitköy roads as “outdated.” He noted that some roads also require urgent repairs and announced that the Dağyolu project will begin within a few days.
Arıklı also addressed the issue of road lighting, noting that nowhere else in the world are all main roads illuminated, while intersections, roundabouts, and secondary road entrances and exits are compulsorily illuminated. He said, “Lighting isn’t perfect here. However, the areas that absolutely need to be illuminated are illuminated. I wish we had the means to illuminate all roads.”
Arıklı stated that lighting is the responsibility not only of the Highways Directorate but also of local governments and Kıb-Tek, reminding them that a portion of lighting fees and traffic fines are allocated for this purpose.
Arıklı stated that they are seeking a collaboration with the Gönyeli-Alayköy Municipality for the lighting of the newly constructed Northern Ring Road, saying, “Our financial resources are clear. Despite this, we carry out many of our projects in collaboration with local governments and sometimes through sponsors. Stay tuned.”
