Çatalköy-Esentepe Municipality Creates “Champion Angels Team Memorial Grove”

The Çatalköy-Esentepe Municipality has created a memorial grove to immortalize the memory of the GMTMK Champion Angels Team.

The Çatalköy-Esentepe Municipality has established a memorial grove to immortalize the memory of the Gazimağusa Turkish Maarif College (GMTMK) Champion Angels team, who lost their lives in the earthquake disaster on February 6.

In the grove created within the Hazreti Ömer Tomb Recreation area of the municipality, 35 olive trees, known as the tree of immortality, were planted, and name plates of the champion angels were hung on each tree.

The plaques on the olive trees were hung by the athletes of the Esentepe Middle School girls’ volleyball team, who were eliminated by the Gazimağusa Turkish Maarif College Girls’ Volleyball team in the championship match, along with municipal council members and village headmen.

Çatalköy-Esentepe Mayor Ceyhun Kırok stated that the loss of the Gazimağusa Turkish Maarif College Angels Team was the greatest pain experienced since 1974, noting that this loss created deep sorrow in society.

Kırok expressed that they decided to create a grove in the recreation area where the Hazreti Ömer Tomb is located to keep the memory of the Champion Angels Team alive, and stated that those who visit this sacred place will remember the champion angels with their prayers.

Kırok mentioned that 50 pine saplings will also be planted in the created memorial grove by local residents, and stated that the memory of the Champion Angels will be kept alive forever.
